Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
